Filed 3/18/03

On St. Patrick's Day, 2003, a group of band members, under the auspices of  BOB radio, 97.9, went to 7 police and fire stations in the Dauphin and Lebanon County areas.  The group of bagpipes and drum led by P/M Steve Hollinger, saluted the policemen, firemen and emergency workers at each of those locations by playing bagpipe music.

Information for venues

The Quittapahilla Highlanders Bagpipe and Drum Band was founded in Annville in 1994.  The Quittapahilla Creek, which begins in Lebanon County and flows to the Swatara Creek and the Susquehanna River, is the source of the Algonquin Native-American name of the band.  The name of the band and the stream is pronounced "Quit - ta - pa - hill - a".

The band is led by Pipe Major Steven Hollinger, a veteran of the US Marine band system.

The band has provided entertainment to a large number of military, community, private, educational, business and cultural events in the South-Central Pennsylvania region.

The band's purposes are to:  (1) perform traditional Scottish bagpipe and drum music; (2) promote fellowship among those interested in pipe and drum music; (3) encourage participation in Scottish and Celtic music and events; and (4) educate and entertain audiences with programs of Scottish and Celtic heritage, history and music.

The band has performed in parades and state and local programs including military programs, theater openings, dedications, school assemblies and community, church, college, stage and mall programs, county fairs, funerals  and weddings.  The band provides soloists for both celebrations and memorials.

Band members are women and men of many ages and ethnic backgrounds and careers.

The band is a non-profit corporation in Pennsylvania.

The band rehearses each week and always welcomes new members.  Training is available beginning pipers and drummers.  Band students and band supporters participate with the band as banner carriers, flag carriers and guards in historic kilt outfits of the "Braveheart" period.
